Recession Boosts Sleeping Pill Sales to Record Highs

Friday, March 27, 2009

Is job insecurity, a tanking 401K, and anxiety about losing your home keeping you up at night?  Well you’re certainly not alone.  As the economy worsens, more and more Americans are suffering from insomnia.  According to a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation, more than 1 in 4 Americans (27% of the population) indicated that worry over finances, the economy or a job loss made them lose sleep in the previous month.

In 2009, a record number of us are turning to sleeping pills in an attempt to cope.  Could this be a dangerous development?

A recent report on sleeping pill use and the economy in the L.A. Times says it just might be. Here’s the money quote:

”...Sleep medications are not without risk: next-day drowsiness is the most common among a list of adverse reactions that include dependence and memory loss. As more people take the drugs, the number of people experiencing problems is likely to rise.

For those reasons, some sleep disorder experts say, it may be time we learned to fall asleep on our own.”

SleepBook thinks this is generally sound advice, and our approach to improving sleep quality and health is based on a “do it yourself,” “natural approach.  Interested in learning more about falling asleep without resorting to medication?  You’ll find tons of advice on getting healthy, natural sleep in your free, customized Sleep Book.  Why not make your Sleep Book now?
